Update: Mike Castoro analogue Seminar @ Misty HIll Audio

On Friday, November 17th Mike Castoro of Wunder Audio and Misty HIll Audio hosted a seminar for the students of TRCoA. Mike started the seminar off by discussing the history and development of key microphones. He discussed in detail the microphone circuitry, allowing everyone to see the internal design of a microphone. Next, the seminar moved on to tape machines, how they operate, and the headroom differences between an analog tape machine and a DAW. Consoles were next, ranging from a Neve console to a console designed for Led Zeppelin. After a brief discussion about the vintage compressors in the studio, we tracked a vocal demo through a compressor, splitting the signal to record the vocal before compression and after compression. The vocal was tracked three times, each time using a different compressor (Fairchild, LA2A, 1176). This allowed us to call the session up at TRCoA to make a direct comparison of the analog compressor, using the compressed signal, and a signal compressed by the plugin emulation, using the uncompressed signal we recorded.
