Update: Ableton Live Seminar by Francis Preve at TRCoA

On Sunday, September 26th TRCoA brought in world-renowned re-mixer and sound designer Francis Preve (left) to talk about Ableton Live. He is one of Ableton's main design consultants, and gave the students in attendance a great introduction to this DAW's impressive capabilities. Starting with a simple loop, he lead a guided tour through Ableton's unique approach and features. From BPM shifts, to warping, to midi instruments, to effects plug-ins, to working with guitar tracks performed and recorded live by John Pointer, Francis covered every aspect of the current version, and gave everyone a sneak peek at version 6, to be released later this year. It was an inspiring and informative session to all in attendance. Watch for further educational seminars like this in the near future from TRCoA.

Who's in the Studio

DorkStar

Dorkstar is an energetic original Austin rock band with a versatile sound. Their style is characterized by a driving rhythm section, melodic vocals, and provocative guitar licks. Somewhat eclectic, Dorkstar’s songs range from soft acoustic to garage punk, with song subjects from music industry commercialism to making breakfast. Their debut album, “Commercial Rock”, was released in March 2005. Chomping at the bit for something new, the band has come to work on their second album with TRCoA’s founder John Stinson at the helm as engineer and producer. Listen to a clip from one of Dorkstar's tracks in progress.

Mela Dailey

As 2005 National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist winner in Women's Voice, and 2005 Metropolitan Opera District Winner and Metropolitan Opera South Regional Finalist, Mela Dailey has command of both her instrument and stage. She has received recognition in a wide variety of musical genres including opera, oratorio, art song, musical theater, vocal jazz, gospel, country and popular music. Mela made her professional debut at Carnegie Hall in 2003 with the Conspirare Company of Voices directed by Craig Hella Johnson, which has worked with Stinson Studios to record all of their live performances in Austin for the past 8 years. Mela has been a recipient of the New York University Talent Scholarship for achievement in musical theater, a winner of the Second Annual University of Texas Opera Gala Aria Competition and was selected as a New Young Artist with the Victoria Bach Festival. She has been in the studio working with John Stinson to expand her audition portfolio. Listen to a clip from one of Mela's tracks.

Rayvon Foster and Cyril Neville with Josh Woodhouse

Josh Woodhouse has been working with renowned Austin producer Rayvon Foster and was recently teamed up with Enviromedia and Cyril Neville to do a commercial for a Katrina relief organization. Josh recorded Cyrils vocals on the backing music and his spoken word part. He then mixed and mastered the final ad. Josh has been working side by side with Rayvon Foster on many projects recently and will more than likely continue to do so for some time to come. Picture from left to right: Ryan Joseph (5th street studios owner), Rayvon Foster (producer), Cyril Neville (artist), Josh Woodhouse (engineer). Listen to the 60 second spot.

Teenage Wildlife with Joshua Saunders

Joshua Saunders, one of TRCoA’s advanced students, is in the studio with the band Teenage Wildlife. Teenage Wildlife has only been together a short period of time, but has quickly put together some great vibey alternative pop songs. The band is made of Ben Maddox (left, the primary song writer) on guitar and lead vocals, Wes Turner on bass, Tyler Thompson on guitar, and Justin Roberts on drums. The band as a group has a continuous, off the wall, quirky sense of humor and Ben's song writing style seems to be heavily influenced by David Bowie and other alternative artists such as (older) Radio Head and Muse. Listen to a short sample of Teenage Wildlife's latest three song E.P.
