Ableton Live Seminar by Francis Preve at TRCoA

Francis Preve (left) has over a decade of chart-topping dance music on both sides of the Atlantic under his belt, remixing artists as diverse as Gabriel & Dresden, Scissor Sisters, Orbital, Salt-n-Pepa, Thrill Kill Kult, D:Fuse, Beborn Beton, and Jacinta. As a composer, he has written a whole catalog of tracks for pop artists, and has also contributed to film soundtracks for Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema, and Touchstone Pictures. But music is only half of the story. Francis’ innovative vision helps create the tools that his peers rely on for their compositions. Ableton, Antares and Korg have all tapped him to develop original presets for their hottest new synthesizers and software, as well as consult on overall product strategy and direction. TRCoA is proud to bring him to Austin to share his insights, and take us on an in-depth tour of Ableton Live on Sun Sept 24th, at 6pm.

ACL Festival

Now in its fifth year, the ACL Festival is a testament to Austin’s position as a major music city that just keeps growing. Featuring artists like Gnarls Barkley, Van Morrison, Muse, the Flaming Lips, and Tom Petty, this year’s festival promises to be more diverse and exciting than ever, just like Austin itself. Students and teachers from the TRCoA will be on the scene, meeting and listening to many of the best artists in the world.

Keep Austin Weird Music Festival and AMF

TRCoA was at this local music festival which showcased a who’s-who of artists with that quintessential Austin sound: Roky Erickson & the Explosives, Dale Watson & the Lonestars, Grady, The Mother Truckers, Larry, The Steps, and Cooper's Uncle. Part rock, part country, part soul, part funky, and definitely home grown. Ticket sales benefited one of Austin’s crown jewels, the Austin Music Foundation. The AMF is the only non-profit organization in the country - one of only two or three in the world - that provides business skills training specifically geared toward the music industry, and at no cost. If that’s what makes Austin weird, let’s keep it that way! You are sure to read of TRCoA's participation in AMF events in newsletters to come.

Who's in the Studio

KriticKill

KriticKill, one of this region’s best heavy bands, is in the final stages of completing their third album release. KriticKill has continued be extremely prolific writers of modern rock songs with great hooks, punchy drums, heavy guitars, and powerful vocals. The skillful song writing and heavy vocal layering of the new songs help make this material some of the band’s best work to date. The album is set to be release sometime in the next few months. Listen to a short, roughly mixed sample of the new up and coming KriticKill.

Mady Kaye and Mitch Watkins

Mady kaye (left), one of Austin’s most sophisticated jazz singers, is putting together her second cabaret album. The new album will display the work and life of Johnny Mercer through a series of great performances by Mady with such guest artists at Mitch Watkins (right). The songs are intermingled with great historical stories about the entertaining life and times of Johnny Mercer. Mady’s acute attention to detail has helped her create many compelling, fantastic works, that all speak of her rich character. The new cabaret album is set to be released sometime in October. Listen to a short snippet of Mady Kaye with Mitch Watkins singing Mercer’s Moon River.

Vast

Jeff Henson, one of TRCoA’s graduates, is in the studio with the band Vast. Vast, who is primarily created by Jon Crosby (top left), has been having major label success since 1998. Jeff Henson mastered their second album and is now recording their third album, which is set to be released in the coming months. With their surreal ambient vibe, Vast has become one of the most popular underground bands around the world. Listen to a short sample of Vast’s second album.

Larry Hilliard

Josh Woodhouse (right), another one of TRCoA’s graduates just finished an album for folk artist Larry Hilliard (left). Larry has a dark, haunting vibe that is created through the use of a big, warm voice and a bluesy, guitar driven sound. Josh Woodhouse also just launched his new web page, Droplink Productions. In time, through his balance of great engineering and business skills Josh will inevitably become one of Austin’s best engineers.
